Where our experience with online testing comes from

Our work with online testing didn’t start with web forms or learning platforms. It started with large-scale, high-stakes assessment.

In the late 1990s, our founder began his career developing software for a state educational testing department. The systems he worked on processed, edited, validated, and scored tens of thousands of standardized test records at a time. These were production systems used to make decisions that affected students, schools, and funding.

That work extended into collegiate performance evaluation and psychometric scoring, often in close collaboration with in-house statisticians. One of his earliest web-based applications — at a time when web applications were still uncommon — was a training system used to score student creative writing assessments consistently and fairly.

When scale and accuracy actually matter

Later, working with a small IT firm under a sole-source state contract, that experience expanded further.

Working onsite at a Department of Education headquarters, we helped design and maintain test processing systems that supported distributed teams of data editors. The architecture had to balance speed, accuracy, auditability, and human review.

In one case, we developed a way to transmit test data from remote field scanners — something test publishing vendors claimed couldn’t be done. That change gave the department additional time to analyze results, identify anomalies, and correct issues before decisions were finalized.

The lesson from that era still holds:

Once testing results matter, the system around them matters more than the interface.

Why online testing systems fail

Most online testing and learning platforms fail for predictable reasons:

  • Scoring logic is opaque or oversimplified
  • Data validation happens too late
  • Edge cases are treated as exceptions instead of design inputs
  • Reporting is bolted on after the fact
  • The system can’t explain its own results

These failures don’t show up immediately. They show up when someone asks:

  • Can we trust this outcome?
  • Can we explain this decision?
  • What happens when this is challenged?

At that point, it’s no longer a learning platform problem. It’s a systems problem.
